about

Birmingham based indie dance label Network was an integral part of the DNA that shaped the early daze of the UK House Music phenomenon.

From an early connection via its’ Kool Kat set up with Detroit Techno pioneers Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins, creating the Rave mythology of Altern 8, championing New York’s Nu Groove releases (“the only other label as mad as us”) embracing Pop success by having a record at number one in the charts for 5 weeks with KWS Please Don’t Go but nevertheless at the same time promoting Underground Resistance and Funky Green Dogs From Outer Space, redefining the art of The Mix Album with its’ groundbreaking Renaissance series, setting up recording studios in the unlikely pairing of New York and Stoke-0n-Trent , or distributing and supporting 30 plus other indie dance labels, Network was .. well Network was just Network.

This album confirms that when the label was good it was on-point brilliant. It’s fitting that Neal Howard’s Chicago homage to Detroit Techno kicks off the album as it was Network’s first release. Rhythmatic’s Take Me Back anthem was Network‘s response to the Bleep murmurings from Yorkshire, and is of course one of the maverick label’s signature releases. Altern 8 (complete with Joey Beltram remix), Rhythm On The Loose and Rhythm Quest underline Network’s contribution to the Rave soundscape, Mother confirmed the label’s proud Brummie roots, and Slo-Mosun’s astonishing Bells Of N.Y showed the operation could take the mickey out of an increasingly pompous dance music industry and make up headline grabbing stories that became as infamous as the records they highlighted were brilliant.

Frustratingly, Network never managed to make The Reese Project into the crossover success their music deserved but worked incessantly to try and make it happen. The Playboys remix here was done years after the original but highlights the label’s knack of connecting just the right UK remix team with USA recordings, as does Serial Diva’s anthemic remix of Inner City’s Your Love.

The habit of keeping faith with contacts from the early days led to mass success with release of Mike Banks anthemic Darlene Lewis monster, and the resurrection of Krush with Rhythmatic’s Mark Gamble.
And if you want the definition of a record that inexplicably “got away” go straight to The Trinity “Gonna Take Time”
Network: “We never took ourselves seriously, we took the music very seriously indeed”.
